AV-TEST Awards 2020 Presented to the Best IT Security Products
Only the best among the IT security industry are afforded the trappings of this trophy: the AV-TEST Award. Achieving it requires attaining peak performance, demonstrated in regular tests over the scope of an entire year. The management of the AV-TEST Institute is now announcing which corporate and consumer products have earned the internationally recognized award for IT security through top test scores in the categories of PROTECTION, PERFORMANCE and USABILITY for Windows, along with ANDROID SECURITY and MAC SECURITY for 2020.
Only the best security products receive the AV-TEST Award.
A year of extreme challenges for IT security products
In retrospect, last year was a helluva challenge for IT security products. First of all, 2020 saw a vast number of sophisticated cyberattacks on virtually all areas of public life. From government servers to the IT infrastructure of companies in industry, and right through to research institutions and telecom providers, all increasingly moved into the crosshairs of cybercriminals. What's more, the number of newly-developed malicious programs grew by nearly 110 million malware samples, analyzed by AV-TEST in 2020, reaching the second-highest figure since they were first recorded in 1984. Back then, the situation was still quite manageable with 12 known malware samples.
By comparison, however, 2020 was also the year of opportunities for IT security products to clearly set themselves apart from the competition. Because quite aside from the rampantly growing malware figures, last year saw unprecedented challenges, not only from a human perspective across the globe; it also demanded Herculean performance from IT security products. With nearly one-third of all employees switching to a home office due to Covid-19, suddenly the security programs of many consumer users, for instance, were also the last line of defense between the Internet and corporate networks. Likewise, business applications had to operate under totally new parameters in the fight against cybercrime. Because all types of cybercriminals were quick to capitalize on the period of uncertainty. Given this volatile situation, only IT security products at the top of their game in terms of technology offered corporate users and consumers optimal protection in this crisis.
For proven peak achievements throughout the entire year and under extreme conditions, the AV-TEST Institute is now recognizing 19 products with its internationally renowned awards. It is the institute's way of honoring the manufacturers' top achievements in the area of research and development, but above all, outstanding protection for consumers and corporate users throughout the one-year test period in 2020. Awards go to the best products in the categories of PROTECTION (protection function), PERFORMANCE (speed) and USABILITY (user-friendliness), as well as in the field of ANDROID SECURITY and MAC SECURITY.

Bitdefender “Internet Security“
F-Secure “SAFE“
Two products demonstrated cutting-edge protection in fending off malware on consumer PCs in the test period of 2020: "Internet Security" from Bitdefender and "SAFE" from F-Secure. The AV-TEST Institute is giving the award in the category of "Best protection on Windows systems for consumer users" to the two manufacturers Bitdefender and F-Secure, based on outstanding results.

In 2020, the test labs at the AV-TEST Institute were able to affirm outstanding threat prevention and peak results in the protection of corporate systems under Windows for a total of three products: "Endpoint Security" and "Endpoint Security (Ultra)" from Bitdefender, as well as "PSB Computer Protection" from F-Secure are sharing the award for best corporate protection.

A minimal reduction in system performance with simultaneously high protection is the prerequisite for receiving the Best Performance Award. The fact that the manufacturers of consumer products have taken usage of system resources seriously is evidenced by the tests of the past year. A total of seven products passed with flying colors: "Antivirus Pro“ from Avira, "Internet Security“ from BullGuard, "SAFE“ from F-Secure, "K7 Total Security“ from K7 Computing, "Total Protection“ from McAfee, "Home“ from PC Matic and "Advanced Security“ from VIPRE.

Trend Micro “Apex One“
In malware prevention, corporate users expect not only the best possible protection but, at the same time, also economical use of their IT resources. "Endpoint Security" from Kaspersky and "Apex One" from Trend Micro were especially high-performing security solutions during the test period of last year. Both products exhibited outstanding results on an equally high level, and are thus receiving the Performance Award 2020.

Avira “Antivirus Pro“
Good protection with simultaneously minimal false alarm rates is the prerequisite for receiving the usability award. Consumers in particular, who have to make do without the assistance of a professional IT department, can appreciate the advantages of such reliable protection programs. The Avira protection package "Antivirus Pro" was impressive in the year-long test, showing minimal false alarms and is thus receiving the Best Usability Award for consumer software.
Symantec “Endpoint Security Complete“
Low false alarm rates not only significantly conserve the resources of corporate users, they also ensure smooth work routines. In the test period of last year, there was one corporate solution that stood out with an extremely low false alarm rate: "Endpoint Security Complete" from Symantec. For top achievements in the comprehensive tests, the corporate product is thus receiving the Best Usability Award 2020.

Sufficiently protecting Android devices is becoming more and more important in the area of personal use. The award for best protection of Android devices in personal use was earned by "Mobile Security" from Bitdefender and "Mobile Security" from Trend Micro, thanks to outstanding results.
ESET “Endpoint Security“
Dependable protection of Android devices is and will always be essential for corporate users. Both the use of company devices and a BYOD strategy require reliable protection and effective controls. This year's award for best protection of mobile user devices used in a corporate environment goes to "Endpoint Security" from the manufacturer ESET.

NortonLifeLock “Norton 360“
With a growing rate of malware for MacOS, the threat prevention of protection solutions for Apple's operating system is increasingly gaining in relevance. The AV-TEST Institute is giving the award in the category of "Best protection for MacOS systems for consumer users" to the product "Norton 360" from NortonLifeLock for the first time, based on outstanding results.
Symantec “Endpoint Protection for Mac“
Peak results in protection of corporate systems under MacOS was demonstrated during the test period of the entire year of 2020 by one product that stood out of the crowd, thanks to absolutely impressive malware protection. "Endpoint Protection for Mac" from Symantec exhibited winning results in the lab of the AV-TEST Institute with otherwise unmatched protection, thus earning the Award 2020 for best corporate protection on MacOS systems.
